PHYSICAL SCIENCE – GRADE 8                              Ms. Norman 2018/19

      Physical Science will allow students to gain an understanding of the basic concepts of Chemistry & Physics.  We will focus on Chemistry during the first part of the year and Physics during the last part.  We will also be integrating a considerable amount of Math and measurement into the Science curriculum.  Math is a tool for scientists.  As scientists we will use it as a tool in the classroom as well.  Hopefully, the math will be more meaningful and easier to understand by all when applied in realistic ways.

 Physical Science Grading System

 

1.  Homework (? Points)
​          Homework will be assigned on an as needed basis.  Overnight homework (problems, worksheets, etc.) will be checked and answers discussed during the period that it is due.   Each assignment will be worth 10 points.  Students will earn
10 pts. for complete work (on time), 5 pts. for complete work later on same day, & 0 pts. anytime after due date.  If you are absent or unsure about an assignment, go to the Parent Portal. Assignments will be posted there.
2.  Notebooks
(50 points)
          Each student is required to keep a 3 ring binder/notebook of daily class notes.  This notebook must be a type where handouts, returned papers, investigations, etc. can be kept as well.  Notebooks will be graded each marking period.

3. Tests
(100 points) / Quizzes (50 points) / Vocabulary Quizzes (based on the # of words)
          Please note that memorization of vocabulary and facts does not always lead to high quiz / test scores.  Students must develop an ability to
understand and apply science concepts.  All tests and quizzes will be announced in advance.
4. 
Lab Reports (50 points (formal), 25 points (informal), 10 points (inquiry activities).
​          Students will be involved with “hands on” experiments as often as possible.  Students need to communicate their understanding of the experiments and the scientific method in written form.  Lab reports are due by the specified date after the lab had been completed. 10% will be lost for each day late.  5 or more days late will result in no credit (0 pts.).

5. 
Special Projects (Points based on project difficulty)
​          Several special projects will be completed during the year.  A few possibilities include Research Projects, Scientist Cubes, Mapping, Real World Electricity Exploration, Atomic Models, Element Cards, and Science Fair.  Projects may be dropped, modified, or added.  All will be announced well in advance.


    
Students are provided with the ability to self monitor or continually track their grades.  We usually complete 1000 points worth of work during the course of a quarter.    2.  Be on time, be prepared.
   3.  No talking unless participating.
   4.  Be polite and show respect to all.
   5.  Raise your hand.
   6.  Use appropriate language.

   7.  Keep your feet off the furniture and
the chairs on the floor.
   8.  Make a mess, clean it up. Physical Science is a hands on science, so you are responsible for your work area.
