I am privileged to teach at RLBMS after growing up in this area, traveling the world and living overseas, raising a beautiful family, and then earning my degree in 2008.  I enjoy teaching, being with my family, flower gardening, my faith, reading, and baking. 

As your children and I embark on the adventure of working together every day in school for English Language Arts- Writing 6  (ELA),  I am looking forward to stimulating their understanding of the conventions of our language, broadening their writing skills and critical reading aptitude, and increasing their spelling capabilities.  My course will be adhering closely to the expectations listed in the Pennsylvania Common Core. 

It is important that students arrive prepared for class with a writing tool, any homework, and an agenda.  They may need to bring their reading textbook, too.  Homework is only eligible for full credit if it has the student’s first and last name on it and is turned in during the class period it is due, with exceptions for absences given.

 Students’ grades will be determined by the marks they earn on their assignments. Please use Parent Portal to check weekly homework assignments and to keep apprised of your 6th grade student's grades for my ELA class.

 6th Grade Language Arts-Writing Syllabus

Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 school year!  I am looking forward to a great year!  Below is some general information I’d like to share with you: 

 

  • Supplies ~ Your child will need a notebook and plenty of pencils for ELA-Writing Class.  A SINGLE-subject notebook with a pocket folder located inside is preferred.

     

  • Communication ~ Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have during the school year.  I welcome your feedback and insight concerning your child.  You can e-mail me at mnance@wellsborosd.org , or you may call the school and I will return your call as soon as I can.  Please use the Parent Portal located on the district’s website for information regarding your child’s grades, classwork, and homework assignments.  If you are not registered for the Parent Portal, the registration process can be found on the homepage of the district’s website.

     

  • Curriculum ~ Your child’s 6th grade ELA-Writing curriculum will consist of reading, writing, English, spelling, language usage, and vocabulary, using the Reading Street Series.  We will cover critical reading, writing exercises, language, spelling, and PSSA practice.  We typically spent 5-6 days on writing and then 5-6 days on specific language arts and spelling practice. When a class novel is read, we will focus in on that for a few weeks, incorporating many language strategies and writing skills. Students will be composing written responses to literature and to stand-alone passages, as well as using the three modes of writing.

     

  • Homework ~  Types of homework assignments will include spelling and grammar practice worksheets, reading passages and questions, studying for tests or quizzes, and story-related assignments.  Typically these types of homework assignments are assigned 2 times a week.  ALL homework is posted on my board in the classroom, on the Parent Portal, and is required to be listed in the student’s agenda.  If an assignment is to be graded, the students will know this ahead of time.  Homework is due at the beginning of class.  If a student is missing his or her homework, I must still receive it by the end of the day.  Late assignments receive a deduction of points from the grade.  More than three missed assignments in a marking period will result in a silent lunch.

     

  • Absences ~The best way to obtain assignments from my class is by accessing the Parent Portal. This is often helpful if your child is absent; however, if your child is PLANNING to be absent, he or she should see me prior to the absence to receive the assignments and to review what will be missed.  If your child has been absent, he or she should see me immediately upon returning to school to either hand in the missed work or to obtain it.  The student should plan to see me during homeroom time, lunch, study hall, or at the end of the day. 
  •  Classroom Rules~

1. Be respectful. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. The teacher must be able to teach and the students must be able to learn. Be considerate of others and others’ personal items.

2. Be prepared.  Bring notebook, agenda, necessary books, any homework, and a pencil to class. You can only receive credit for work if it has your name (first name and last initial) on it.

3. Do your best. You are responsible for doing your work and for the grades you earn.  At the end of the nine weeks, the computer will add your total points earned and divide by the possible points you could have earned.  This will be your grade.

Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior:
-Verbal warning, removal from room, communication with parent/guardian, silent lunch, referral to office
Note: The teacher reserves the right to administer these consequences in any order, depending on the inappropriate behavior being exhibited.
