Reading - Language Arts Syllabus

Reading - Language Arts Class ~ Grade 6 ~ Mrs. Kreisler ~ Room # 311

Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 school year!  I am looking forward to a great year!  Below is some general information I’d like to share with you:

  • Supplies ~ Your child will need a single- subject notebook and plenty of pencils for ELA Class.  A SINGLE-subject notebook with a pocket folder located inside is preferred.
  • Communication ~ Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have during the school year.  I welcome your feedback and insight concerning your child. You can e-mail me at tkreisler@wellsborosd.org , or you may call the school and I will return your call as soon as I can.  Please use the Parent Portal located on the district’s website for information regarding your child’s grades, classwork and homework assignments. If you are not registered for the Parent Portal, the registration process can be found on the homepage of the district’s website.
  • Curriculum ~ Your child’s 6th grade ELA curriculum will consist of – Reading, Writing, English, Spelling, Language Usage and Vocabulary. We will use: the Reading Street Series – which focuses on a variety of genres; grammar; language usage; vocabulary; spelling and writing. We will read three novels (one done in the fall, the other two done in the spring); Language, Reading, Vocabulary and Writing exercises; A.R.; & PSSA Practice. We typically spent 6-7 days on a short story, and then have 6-7 days of specific language arts practice. When we read a novel we will focus on it for a few weeks and we will incorporate many language strategies and skills while enjoying the novel.

Students will be incorporating written responses to literature in all areas mentioned above.

  • ~ An outline of the 6th grade A.R. guidelines will be coming home with your child in the next few days. Please save this guide as a reference for the school year. AR information is also provided on the Parent Portal. First, your child will take the STAR test in class which will help determine the AR level he/she should be reading at for this year. AR reminders should be recorded by your child in his or her agenda. If you are trying to determine a book’s AR level and point value, please use www.arbookfind.com to help you. It is imperative that your child keep up with their AR reading and individual goal. I appreciate all of your support and encouragement in this area!
  • Homework ~ Your child’s main homework for Language Arts class will be to read his or her AR book EVERY night. I recommend at least 20 minutes or more of reading time. This will keep a student from rushing at the last minute to fulfill AR requirements. Other types of homework assignments will include: vocabulary practice worksheets, skills practice worksheets, reading passages & questions, studying for tests or quizzes, and story related assignments. Most often these types of homework assignments are assigned 3-4 times a week. ALL homework is posted on my board in the classroom, on the Parent Portal and is required to be listed in the student’s agenda. If an assignment is to be graded, the students will know this ahead of time. Homework is due at the beginning of class. If a student is missing his or her homework, I must still receive it by the end of the day. Late assignments receive a deduction of points on a grade.More than three late assignments in a marking period will result in a silent lunch.
  • Absences – The best way to obtain classwork and homework from my class is by accessing the Parent Portal. You can print copies of the worksheets I am using directly from the Portal. This is often helpful if your child is absent, however, if your child is PLANNING to be absent, he/she should see me prior to the absence to receive the assignments and to review what will be missed. If your child has been absent, he or she should see me as soon as returning to school to either hand in the missed work or to obtain it. The student should plan on seeing me during homeroom time, lunch, study hall or at the end of the day.

Please email me at tkreisler@wellsborosd.org or call the school office at 570-724-2306 if you have any questions!
