Accelerator Reader

My goal is to develop lifelong learners who love to read.  It is my belief that reading is crucial to everything we do as active members of society.  I also belief that books are windows that enable us to see into the hearts and minds of other human beings.  As we read, we learn, gain experiences, obtain insights, and are frequently entertained. 
Reading is a skill.  And like all skills, it needs to be practiced.  Just like we learned to swim by swimming.  Just like we learned to drive by driving.  So it is also true with reading.  WE LEARN TO READ BY READING!
The Accelerated Reader Program is based on the fundamental principle that practice improves reading.  It combines the power of computer technology, Accelerated Reader, with a set of sound teaching strategies in a new and effective way.  It is successful because it enables your child to experience reading practice and helps me monitor and guide that practice.
I will use the AR Program as a supplemental reading program that simply manages student reading practice.  
Students will take a S.T.A.R test at the beginning of the year to determine their individual reading level and range.  This is the reading range students will use in order to choose AR books appropriate for their level of comprehension and success.  S.T.A.R tests will also be administered in the middle and at the end of the year.  This will hopefully determine that students are meeting goals, expectations, and making progress.

Students are expected to always have an AR book at all times.
*  Students are expected to meet the AR requirements each marking period.
*  Students are expected to reach their point goal by the end of each marking period.
*  Students are expected to take AR quizzes as necessary, provide copy to teacher, and keep quiz in AR folder.
*  Students will also receive a grade in the grade book for meeting their point goal, a total quiz average, and completing a nonfiction requirement..
